“Road to Appomattox: A Soldiers Tribute”

Welcome to the Second Annual “Ashokan Civil War Days” a weekend event for the entire family. Join us on Saturday May 22nd and Sunday May 23rd to commemorate the 145th anniversary of the Surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. The encampment is open to the public at 10 a.m. each day. Our goal is to provide event visitors with an inspiring and meaningful mid-19th century living history experience that will evoke the memory of our ancestors who lived during one of the most turbulent times in American History. Visitors who attended last year’s event thoroughly enjoyed the same Catskills Mountains setting that inspired “Ashokan Farewell”, the theme song of Ken Burn’s PBS Civil War series. Program activities will explore major military events and day-to-day life during the 1860s through soldier and civilian portrayals.  Step back in time and immerse yourself in the social, political, technological, economic, literary and other cultural transformations that helped shape our nation.

During the weekend we will recreate the moment at Wilmer McLean House where two great armies finally ended the conflict. You will see and hear the actual exchange of words at the “Surrender Meeting” between Generals Grant and Lee. The contrast between the two senior commanders was striking and at its conclusion the bloodiest conflict in the nation’s history neared its end. In addition, infantry skirmishes, cavalry and artillery demonstrations, U.S. Naval Landing Party exhibit, civilian portrayals, music in camp programs, a period dance, blacksmithing, tinsmithing, broom making, wet-plate photography, book presentations, historical art displays, 1860s cake walk, sutlers and Civil War roundtable activities will provide a rich mid-19th century experience throughout the weekend.
