Civil War Naval Traditions

“The Rise of the Ironclads”

The US Naval Landing Party (USNLP) will present a display of period naval weapons and tools in the Pewter Shop, as well as demonstrations of nautical music, cooking and howitzer firings. Discussions are audience-driven, and can range from questions about daily life to the great sea battles-- as well as dealing with many of the lesser-known deeds of the Yankee "Jack Tars" whose war included every navigable creek in Dixie, the entire seacoast of the South, and the entire globe in their hunt for rebel pirates. The Navy's Civil War, at sea and on the land, was very different from that of Federal soldiers and is not well known today -- especially regarding the story of one of the most top secret weapons, the first submarine in the US Navy, The Alligator.
